Who are you related to? I knew a Wanda Shobe in Cumberland
(Cresaptown area). There are a few Shobes in my 10,000 name database
which is not available because there are living people in it. However,
the attached Stockli.ged file of the first 7 or 8 generations is
available. Will you observe the usual considerations in its use,
especially not to copy it for others to use. There are a number of
reasons why we request this precaution. The database was published
to improve the data therein contained, obtain corrections, and fill in
gaps in the data. The database is the fruit of over ten Stickley
cousins, over half now dead. Ellsworth Stickley published a 1982
listing of Stickleys, and his efforts are reflected in the database.
Any more information you may be willing to give us will be gladly
accepted.
John Abraham Stickley lived in Hampshire County, VA (WV).

Marriage of Schaub, Jacob {I174} (b. 1576, d. ?) and Jennings, Barbara {I30} (b. 1580, d. ?)
Note: Spellings and Derivation of the Name Schaub

The following spellings could be established:
Schaub, Schaup, and Schaupp, Schäuble, Schaible, Scheuble, Schäublin, and
Schäubli, as well as Schaab, Schawb, Schout, Schoup.

The meaning of the name:
Die Schaube: meant in Saxony, a short overcoat worn by all womenfarrners.
In the Augsburg region, it meant a woman's complete outer
garment.
According to Albert Heinze in "Deutsche Familiennamen."(1922
Halle/Saale)
"Schaube", in Mid-high German "schoube, schube", means along,
wide, outer
dress, or tunic.
According to Carl Gunther Ludovici in "Grossesvolstandiges
Universallexikon", published in 1734 in Halle and Leipzigby
Verlag Johann
Heinrich Zedler,

"Schaube" around 1460, meant" a wide, pleated furlined
frock coat, open at the front. Later in the 16 hundreds itmeans
a wrap
(shawl) worn by men. In the 17 hundreds “Schaube” means an
official robe
worn by lawyers or university officials. A "Schaub" or a
Schau(ner) was a
man who made these robes.

Der Schaub: In the High German manner of speaking in the South andSoutwest
of Germany, "der Schaub" was a bundle of straw, accordingto
Prof. Josef
Karlmann Brechenmacher, in "Deutsches Namensbuch.”

Schaub in 1823:
Burkadus known as Schoup (middlehighgerman shoup – BoundStraw)
"Der Strohwisch" (whisk of Straw) was a symbol of the law,
symbolising
taking possession or seizing by law. Even today, a 'Whiskof
Straw"
indicates that a road, for example, is closed to traffic.Inn
Keepers also
used the whisk of straw as their symbol.

A "Schaubhut" is a strawhat.

Der Schaup, des Schaubes: in middle high German, Schoupmeans a
bundle of
straw, or a whisk made of straw, as a sign of a wineretailer.

Schaub

1. The name Schaub comes from the Italian “giubba,” the French “joupe,”
Middlehigh German, “Shoup (Shoupes). Out of these developsthe
name Schaub, but also the name “Joppe.”
2. The name Schaub is comes from several roots, and because of that
developed in many forms not related to each other.

(Copied and translated from K Egenberger's "Familie Schaub inKonigsbach,
Wachenheim U. Deidesheim")

Note: In the German version above, there are listed records of the
Schaub/Schoup etc in the history books and University of Freiburgrecords.

Peter Schaub 12/13/1998

Schaub is a shortened form of Schauber, which in itself is a variationof the German occupational name Schauer, the name given the officialinspector -- of a market, for example, from the Middle High Germanschouwer > schouwen = to look, inspect. Other variations are Schauert,Schauber .
